The Darsena: Milan's Forgotten Harbour, Reborn as the City's Waterfront
For most of the twentieth century the Darsena was a disgrace – a silted dock used as a car park, fenced off and ignored. Today it is one of the most popular places in Milan to spend a summer evening. Getting There from Our B&B
By metro: from Moscova (M2 green line), 300 metres from the B&B, take the M2 to Porta Genova FS (about 12 minutes), then walk 700 metres along the Naviglio Grande. Door to door: roughly 22 minutes. Sant'Agostino on the M2 is an equally good exit.
On foot: approximately 3.2 km, about 40 minutes, cutting through the centre past the Colonne di San Lorenzo.
The Port That Built the Duomo
It is easy to forget that Milan was once a port. The Darsena is where the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio Pavese meet, and for centuries it was the busiest inland harbour in Italy – at its peak handling more freight than many coastal ports.
The marble for the Duomo arrived here, floated down from the Candoglia quarries on Lake Maggiore. So did coal, sand, grain and salt. The basin took its present shape in the sixteenth century under Spanish rule.
Commercial traffic ended in the 1970s. The water stagnated, the dock was drained, and for decades it was simply a hole in the city. The restoration completed for Expo 2015 dredged the basin, refilled it and built the promenades that make it what it is now.
What to See and Do
- The promenade – walkways run along both banks, with the water at eye level and benches facing west.
- Sunset – the basin faces roughly west and this is one of the finest sunsets in the city.
- Mercato Comunale di Piazza XXIV Maggio – a restored covered market at the head of the dock, now full of food stalls and small kitchens.
- Porta Ticinese – the neoclassical gateway that closes the square, built to celebrate Napoleon's victory at Marengo.
- The start of both canals – walk west along the Naviglio Grande for the busy side, south along the Naviglio Pavese for the quiet one.
- Boat trips – seasonal cruises leave from the Darsena in the warmer months.
Practical Information
- Cost: free. It is a public waterfront.
- Best time to visit: an hour before sunset, staying for aperitivo. Mornings are quiet and good for photographs.
- Market: generally open from mid-morning to late evening, with most food stalls busiest from 18:00.
- Busy periods: Friday and Saturday evenings are extremely crowded from spring onwards.
- Booking ahead: not needed for the area; advisable for canal-side restaurants at weekends.
Combine It With the Navigli
The Darsena and the Navigli are really one outing. Arrive at the dock in the late afternoon, watch the sun go down over the water, then walk up the Naviglio Grande for dinner. The last metro from Porta Genova runs around midnight.
