Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio: The Church That Made Milan, 25 Minutes from Our B&B

The Duomo is the postcard, but Sant'Ambrogio is the soul of Milan. Founded in 379 AD by the city's patron saint himself, it is one of the oldest churches in Europe and the model for Romanesque architecture across northern Italy. Guests at Taylor's Love Solferino B&B reach it easily by metro.

Getting There from Our B&B

By metro: from Moscova (M2 green line), 300 metres from the B&B, take the M2 to Cadorna and change to the M2 towards Abbiategrasso for Sant'Ambrogio station – the basilica is 200 metres from the exit. Door to door: around 20 minutes.

On foot: approximately 2.0 km, about 25 minutes, through Brera and past the Castello Sforzesco.

Ambrose, the Bishop Who Stood Up to an Emperor

Ambrose was governor of Milan when the crowd acclaimed him bishop in 374 – before he had even been baptised. He built this basilica on a Christian burial ground and was buried here himself in 397, beside the martyrs Gervasius and Protasius.

All three are still here, visible in the crypt beneath the high altar. It is one of the very few places in Europe where you can look at a figure who shaped late Roman history.

Ambrose baptised Saint Augustine in Milan in 387. He also faced down the Emperor Theodosius, refusing him communion after the massacre at Thessalonica – the first time a churchman had forced an emperor to do public penance.

What to Look For

  • The atrium – the arcaded courtyard in front, a feature of early Christian basilicas that has almost entirely disappeared elsewhere.
  • The two bell towers – deliberately unequal. The shorter Monks' tower is ninth century; the taller Canons' tower is twelfth.
  • The golden altar – the ninth-century Altare d'Oro by Vuolvinius, gold and silver panels showing the lives of Christ and Ambrose. One of the great survivals of Carolingian art.
  • The crypt – the three skeletons in episcopal vestments, Ambrose in the centre.
  • The Sacello di San Vittore in Ciel d'Oro – a small fifth-century chapel with a gold mosaic ceiling. Small entrance fee, absolutely worth it.
  • The serpent column – a bronze serpent on a pillar, according to legend brought from Constantinople.

Practical Information

  • Opening hours: roughly 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:30 to 18:00 on weekdays, with shorter morning hours on Sundays. Closed to visitors during Mass.
  • Admission: free to the basilica. A small charge (a few euro) for the Sacello and the museum.
  • Dress code: shoulders and knees covered.
  • Best time to visit: mid-morning on a weekday, when light comes through the atrium and there are almost no visitors.
  • 7 December: the feast of Sant'Ambrogio, a public holiday in Milan, with the Oh bej! Oh bej! street market around the basilica.

What Is Nearby

The Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci is 300 metres away, and Santa Maria delle Grazie with Leonardo's Last Supper is a ten-minute walk north. The three make an excellent half-day together.

Why Staying in Brera Makes the Difference

Taylor's Love Solferino B&B is at Via Solferino 56 in Zone 1, the historic centre, between Brera, Moscova and Corso Garibaldi. Sant'Ambrogio keeps short and irregular opening hours – being twenty minutes away means you can simply try again after lunch rather than writing off the visit.

For travellers who prefer a short stay apartment in Milan centre to a hotel, the B&B offers free self check-in with a smart lock. Porta Garibaldi FS, 700 metres away, connects directly to Malpensa Airport with the Malpensa Express.
